Sticks and Stones…
…may break my bones, but WORDS will never hurt me. We have been told this since we were little children. How true is this? Are our words harmless? Or do our words have power?
Words have power.
Words can affect us for a lifetime! Things we say can determine our own or others’ futures. I am the worst at just blurting things out without thinking. I am not known for my tact. God has really been convicting me of this lately. About a year ago, a song came on the radio. I had heard “Words” by Hawk Nelson before, but this time it really convicted me.
Words can break you down
Start a fire in your heart or
Put it out
Let my words be truth
I don’t wanna say a word
Unless it points the world back to You
Do Your Words Show God’s Love?
I do not want my words to tear people down or to hurt them. Instead, I want my words to be uplifting and empowering, helpful and inspiring. But mostly, I want my words to show God’s love!
Once our words leave our mouths, we cannot take them back. They are out there, and you cannot change them. They have done either damage or good.
I have had this happen to me. Things have been said to me in passing that ended up changing who I was. On at least one occasion, it caused me harm. I became anorexic because of something that was said to me. I’m sure most of these things were not said to hurt me, but many ultimately did.
Most of us have been hurt by things others have said, either purposely or inadvertently. Think about those times and how you felt when you heard those words. Is that how we want to make others feel? We should be positive in what we say. Let’s build each other up with positive words.
Let our words be Life! Let our words be Truth!
There is power in our words!

Proverbs 18:21 – it don’t get any better than that when it comes to our words
Yes! Words matter!
Speak whatsoever is good to uplift and encourage
Yes!
Speak life and speak words that heal
Amen.
Amen! I love this topic and I love that song. Proverbs 18:21 is also a favorite of mine. I always want to make sure that I am speaking LIFE
God has really been convicting me so much lately and this was a biggie for me.
This is such an important truth. Our words matter more than we know.
Yes, God is really teaching me to think before I speak.
Sometimes I have to remember patience in my response. My child is going through a difficult time and i have to remember to look through his filter
Yes, especially with children. I was reminded of this tonight (don’t you love how God works?). They are so vulnerable. I was only 14 when something was said about my weight. That set me on the path to anorexia.
I need to work on this sometimes. I hate the way you can’t get them back when they fly out of your mouth! My biggest problem is tone of voice.
Yes, I didn’t even mention tone! So true. Thank you for the reminder!
I used to think this song was pretty cheesy. But all that aside, the words carry so much truth!!
God can and will speak to us in many different ways.
Great reminder! I am constantly having to work on this one as I tend to say things I shouldn’t when I get angry and caught up in the moment. Love the verses, love the song, love the post! Thanks girl!
I am convicted almost daily of my words. You’re welcome. Thank you for reading.
thinking of that verse that says “life and death are in the power of the tongue”…
Ooooh, that’s a good one!
We must choose every day to speak positive words or negative ones
Yes, we choose what we say, and we choose how we react.
