Being Still

These days, the idea of stillness and quietness is very hard to find. My family lives in Houston. Even quiet time outside away from the television is filled with the noise of car engines starting, planes flying over, or horns honking in the distance.
A few weekends ago I had the privilege of getting a break from my day-to-day life with one of my dearest friends. I hope everyone has a friend like I do in their life. I have heard it said, “A real friend walks in when everyone else has walked out.” She has been that friend to me over and over in my life. We headed off to the island of Mackinac Island located on Lake Huron in Michigan. It is a lovely and unique place. There are no motorized vehicles on the island. Taxis are horse-drawn carriages. Bicycling and walking are the primary sources of transportation. I was instantly struck with the quietness even with people in the main street. It was strange to only hear the chatter of people and the hooves of the horses on the streets.
I instantly thought of the verse “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)
A Hillsong song quickly came to mind as we were surrounded by water:
Hide me now
Under Your wings.
Cover me
Within Your mighty hand.
When the oceans rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with You above the storm.
Father, you are King over the flood.
I will be still, know You are God
Find rest my soul
In Christ alone.
Know His power
In quietness and trust.
The change of scenery, time with someone who has always loved me wherever I am, and the quietness was a huge boost to my weary soul. God really spoke to me through the fall colors and crisp mornings.
How do you find stillness and quietness in this world?
