Do you remember the song “Hopelessly Devoted To You” sung by Olivia Newton John in the late 1970s?  What is devotion?  What are you devoted to?  Are you sure it’s devotion, or is it simply a habit?  My pastor asked these questions recently and it got me to really thinking.

Devotion vs. Habit

Devotion means love, loyalty, or enthusiasm for a person, activity, or cause.

We have so many things we are “devoted” to: spouses, children, friends, organizations, hobbies, etc.  These are things that we are loyal to or enthusiastic about.  But are we devoted to God?  Do we truly commit time and energy to Him or do we just do these things out of habit?

A habit is a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.

We have lots of habits.  Some people have a habit of biting their fingernails, chewing gum, smoking, locking the car doors, or wearing a seat belt.  Habits can be good or bad.

Is Your Spiritual Life Habit or Devotion?

We read our Bible every day.  We have our “quiet time.”  We go to church every Sunday and Wednesday.  Are we doing it out of habit or out of devotion?  Do we go through the motions and not get anything out of it?  What is the motive for our actions?

The busyness of the world distracts all of us from time to time!  Some have children to care for.  Or perhaps some have parents or grandparents to care for.  Some are workaholics.  With all these things to do, we sometimes just unconsciously go through life, going through the motions out of habit.  I think most of us have done this at some point in our lives, or even perhaps right now.

We need to wake up and become aware of this so that we can truly live for God!  We should read our Bible, go to church, and truly worship God.  It is only through this true devotion that we can show His love to others.

Do you do as Jesus commands us in Matthew 22:37?

“And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.”

If we can truly say that our life reflects this verse, then we are truly devoted to God.

Devote yourself to God and don’t make Him just a habit!
