All of the titles in the Torchlighters’ series are inspiring.  These last few are just as inspiring if not more.  All of the men and women  in this series willingly laid down their lives.  They were selfless in their ambitions and because of their willingness to use their talents for the Lord, God blessed them in such ways that their names will be remembered for generations because they have impacted so many lives.

My prayer is that we will all be encouraged to put on the armor of the Lord, to walk in boldness and courage and be selfless with our lives so that our Lord and Savior may change the lives of many others with his love.

Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

John 12:24

The Jim Elliot Story

“One track Jim” only has the mission field on his mind. He knows God spared his life several times for a reason and that his purpose is to share the good news with others. He is an example of selThe Jim Elliot Storyf sacrifice.  Willing to go to the ends of the Earth, Jim introduces Christ to a tribe known for nothing other than murder and revenge. He and some other men reach out in love to this tribe and receive spears in return.  The families of these men continue their work by continuing to show love, forgiveness and that revenge does not have to be part of their story. Christ is the best ending to all our stories!

Watch the Jim Elliot trailer.

The Eric Liddell Story

The fastest runner in the world in the 400 meters found himself running everywhere.  From the Olympics to cities in China saving lives, Eric Liddell (aka The Chariot of FireThe Eric Liddell Story guy) found himself using his talent for the Lord.  The Lord emboldened him not only to run fast but to share his love in his actions and words where ever he went, even in the internment camp in China where he later died.  Most of us only know him for his speed, but his life of ministry for the Lord is even more impressive than his Olympic records.

Enjoy the Eric Liddell trailer.

The Samuel Morris Story

Prince Kaboo, later known as Samuel Morris, had a Saul to Paul experience.  After being captured and tortured by a rival tribe, he trusted that his father would save him.  As he was being tied and positioedn to be executed, Prince Kaboo called out to his father.  His earthy father was unable to save him, but the Heavenly father he did not yet know did.  Once Prince Kaboo realized who it wasThe Samuel Morris Story that saved him, he took on the name Samuel Morris and never stopped talking about his Heavenly Father and how he saves and changes lives.  You will be inspired by this young man’s journey to bring God to his people and how he changed the lives of so many on the other side of the world.

You’ve already been introduced to Robert Jermain Thomas, Augustine, Gladys Aylward, William Booth, & Amy Carmichael.   Now, you get the chance to meet some more Heroes of the Faith who have faced all types of different situations over the centuries but have one thing in common, they serve an amazing Savior and won’t let the world talk them out of it!

The John Bunyan StoryThe John Bunyan Story

John Bunyan was initially known by his friends as one that would “keep the devil company in hell, ” but once he became a christian he still couldn’t shake the fear of eternal damnation.  It was a constant struggle for him until he found some who lived with an eternal joy in their hearts.  He took on this joy and grace by giving it all up to Christ and no longer carrying the burden of fear.  Once he understood this, he couldn’t keep the good news to himself, even though it was illegal for anyone outside of the “official church of England” to preach.  He shared his new found knowledge with other hungry souls and was imprisoned for 12 years.  While imprisoned he not only continued to preach but also wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress, which is the 2nd best selling book of all time behind the Bible.

Watch the John Bunyan trailer.

The Perpetua Story

This is my absolute favorite. Perpetua was the daughter of a very wealthy Roman citizen inThe Perpetua Story Carthage and a mother to a baby boy.  She and her fellow brothers & sisters in Christ met secretly to encourage each other as Christianity was illegal and punishable by death. Once caught in the act of worshiping, she and several others were jailed.  The peace, love, and absolute trust they held in Christ while rejoicing at the chance to suffer for their savior baffled the jail keeper, who worshiped the roman gods.  This jailer witnessed firsthand how they leaned into Christ and rejoiced in the answer to their prayers and then received the answers they had been given.  Before Perpetua braved physical death for a glorious eternal life, she wrote down everything for her son, so he would understand the sacrifice she made and the jailer finished the story of how God protected her and the others in the gladiators’ arena.

Be encouraged by the Perpetua Story trailer.

The Corrie ten Boom Story

This isThe Corrie ten Boom Story my oldest son’s favorite.  He calls it the soldier story and by the end you will know why.  This powerful story of Corrie ten Boom and her family brings to the forefront a love for all life, a willingness to save others no matter the cost, an understanding of what being grateful is no matter the circumstance and what true forgiveness looks like.  Corrie’s family hid Jews from the Natzis during War World II and were sent to concentration camps for their actions.  God promised Corrie and her sister they would be freed from Auschwitz and that Corrie would go on to serve all those who had survived as well.

Be inspired by the Corrie ten Boom trailer.

The William Tyndale Story

Would you believe that at one time it was against the law in England to have the ScripturTHe william Tyndale Storyes written or spoken in English? Immediate death came to anyone who broke this law.  Scripture interpretation was held strictly by the church authorities.  Tyndal believed all should have access to Scripture even the most common person.  He chose to do God’s work without the church’s permission and courageously started translating the Bible into English.  He became a fugitive and a lawbreaker in the eyes of England but an obedient follower in the eyes of God. His courage cost him his physical life but within a short time after his death, his last prayer came true.

Watch the William Tyndale Story Trailer.

The Richard Wurmbrand Story

IThe Richard Wurmbrand Storyn newly communist Romania, Christians are forced to choose between serving their God or their country.  Richard Wurmbrand stood courageously for his God and continually spoke out to everyone he met even while being imprisoned and tortured for 8 years.  The communist party tried to destroy his family by splitting them up and forcing them into hard labor or communistic thought but through it all their courage and trust in God only burned brighter.  Because of their courage and willingness to take a stand for modern day martyrs, they later moved to the United States and started an organization called Voice of the Martyrs, which to this day reaches out to those being persecuted for their faith.

Be encouraged by the Richard Wurmbrand Story trailer.

The John Wesley StoryThe John Wesley Story

John Wesley had such zeal for the Lord, but his zeal was legalistic and very strict.  He does everything he can to be the perfect christian but is at a loss because he doesn’t have peace.  Once he understands salvation by grace and what trusting Christ looks like, his life drastically changes.  Joy takes over and his zeal is enhanced by the power of grace coupled with spiritual discipline.  He shares the message openly for all to hear outside of the church doors and brings salvation to many as well as anger to others who don’t want this message to be spread.  Since this message is not welcome within the pulpits of the churches in England at the time, John and others later found the Methodist movement.

Need an idea of what to do this weekend or a way to have fun serving with others? Gather up a group of friends and have fun serving others.

It feels so good to serve others because Jesus loves them, but sometimes, it’s a struggle to come up with ideas of how to help.  A few years ago, I ran across a brilliant idea – a Service Scavenger Hunt!

Instead of collecting objects on the scavenger hunt, you perform a service for someone else.  If you do a quick search in Pinterest, you’ll find many different fun things to do.

There are so many different ways you can do this and this is great for:
  • Families – Pick a family or multiple families.
  • Date Night Fun – Pick other couples and serve several neighborhoods.
  • Youth Groups – this is a great way to combine elementary, middle school & high school groups.
  • Fellowship/Small Groups – Adults of all ages can have fun serving.  Ask your group or a bunch of groups.
  • Or go by yourself or with one other person and call it a secret serving mission!
Rules:
  1. Determine how many “Scavenger Service Projects” need to be completed to win.  Ex: 5 out of 10
  2. Split up into groups as close to even as possible.
  3. Each group gets to choose which projects they will complete.
  4. Make sure each group has a phone that takes pictures and can connect to others.
  5. Create a way to communicate with the other groups.  This could be via messenger, text, email, Instagram, whatever.  There are so many options, but make sure you all use the same form of communication so that you can do the next step.
  6. Before heading out, pray for your service to glorify God and that He will put people in your path who are needing some extra love from Him today.
  7. Upon completing a task, take a picture and send it out to the entire group, as proof that you have completed your task.  Use hashtags
    1. #ServiceScavengerHunt
    2. #CaGD (for Creating a Great Day so we can cheer you on too)
    3. Create a fun # for your group.
  8. Be sure to let whomever you are serving know why you are doing it.  Yes, it’s fun, but it’s more about taking the time to love them because Jesus loves them!  And don’t forget to thank them for letting you serve them.  If the person you choose to serve isn’t home, leave a note for them.
  9. Once you’ve completed all your projects, send the final picture and meet up at a predetermined location to celebrate together once all the teams have finished and return.  Maybe have a cookout and ice cream with some praise and worship thrown into the mix.  Feel free to even invite the people you have served to join you in your celebration.
Here are Creating a Great Day’s Service Scavenger Hunt Ideas:
  1. Go to a local laundromat.  Pay for someone’s wash and dry or help fold clothes.
  2. Find a policeman or fireman and ask if you can pray over them for their protection and thank them for their service.
  3. Find the following items in your house and take them to a local homeless shelter.
    1. Sneakers
    2. Gym Shoes for men, women & children
    3. Sweatpants of all sizes
    4. Briefs/underwear for men, women & children
    5. Men’s trousers (small, medium, large) and shoes
    6. Baby powder milk
    7. Any non perishables like nut butters or other long-lasting foods
    8. Diapers
    9. Feminine products
    10. Sleeping bags
    11. Mats (camping or yoga mats)
    12. Hats & caps – light colored
  4. Walk a residential street and ask the available houses, if they have anything on the list above that they would like to donate.
  5. Mow someone’s yard.
  6. Take flowers to a shut-in or widow.
  7. Go to a retirement home and sing two songs or provide some sort of entertainment to those in the waiting area.
  8. Drop off a bag of diapers at a new parent’s home.
  9. Hold a sign up on a street corner that says, “Will pray for you, if you ask! God Bless” and stand there for at least 10 minutes.
  10. Go to a gas station and clean at least 3 car windshields.
  11. Go to a local store like Wal-Mart, Target, Sams, Costco, etc and offer to take their cart back to the front for them.  (Offer to at least 10 people.)
  12. Have everybody in the group write a note to a friend they haven’t seen or talked to in a while and mail the letters.
  13. Pick weeds out of a flower bed or front yard.
  14. Rake leaves.
  15. Add your own ideas!

Who will you call together to go on the
Fall Service Scavenger Hunt?
We would love it if you would share your pictures with us or tag #CaGD so we cheer you on too!

What other service ideas would you add to the list?

Lord, we thank you for walking this Earth and teaching us how to serve in love.  We pray that as we go out and serve that your love will be evident and you will be glorified in every interaction.  In Jesus’ powerful name – Amen!

A Leaf And A Rock: Celebrating Children’s Little Treasures

A Leaf And A Rock: Celebrating Children’s Little Treasures

Hello!I grew up in sunny Southern California and made my way out to Oklahoma where I attended college.I met my amazing husband there, and the rest is history! We have 3 spirited kiddos, 2 fluffy poodles, and we worship 1 amazing God!We are a homeschooling family and we currently are living the small town life in Newcastle, Oklahoma. I love crafting, writing, and decorating on a dime!

A Leaf and a RockMy children spend hours playing and exploring our backyard.  They frequently are covered from head-to-toe in mud from making “delicious” mud pies and from digging up muddy treasures.

The other day my daughter ran inside with a huge, proud smile plastered across her face and said, “Mama! Look at this beautiful leaf and this shiny rock I found! They are for you!”

I graciously accepted her precious gifts and I acted as if she had brought me rare gems.  To the everyday person she brought me a dirty stone and a dingy bug-eaten leaf, but to her it was a truly marvelous find.

It might seem strange to celebrate such an odd gift; however, she cheerfully gave me her most precious possessions.  Instead of stashing these items away for herself she chose to give them to me, and she was more than happy to do that.  That dirty little white rock and the leaf were some of the sweetest gifts I have received.  As a five-year-old she doesn’t have a whole lot of gifts to give, and she selflessly chose me to be the lucky new owner of these prized possessions.

It is so important to encourage our children to be cheerful givers.  I want my children to grow up and continue to see the importance of happily giving to others, whether that be money, time, or using their God-given gifts.  How much more special is a gift when it is given cheerfully rather than out of pure obligation?  That is why I will continue to make a special point to celebrate the simple treasures they bring me.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV)

I encourage you to relish and celebrate your children’s little treasures and gifts!  What are some ways that you help your children continue to develop into cheerful givers?

“Create a great day!”

The first time I heard this phrase, I was part of a Let’s Start Talking mission team to Venezuela.  That phrase struck me at my core and has become a part of my everyday thinking for the last 16 years.

What does Creating a Great Day Mean?

It means so much.  I actually tear up thinking about all it means because God has used it to bring me through so much and we hope he uses it in amazing ways in your life too.

It means…

  • Allowing our reactions to be controlled by the Spirit and not by the events of the day
  • Seeing that each day has a purpose and that purpose involves us being an active participant in it instead of just letting the day go by
  • Opening our hearts so God can work through us
  • Spreading joy wherever we go instead of leaving a path of grumbling & negativity
  • Encouraging others on their life’s journey
  • Being a light for Christ in a dark world
  • Providing a safe place for one to question, doubt, fail, forgive, grow & come to know Jesus better
  • Standing tall in faith when Satan attacks
  • Supporting others through difficult times
  • Sharing God and all His glory with whomever we come in contact
  • Liftng each other up in prayer
  • Going the extra mile
  • Smiling to make others smile
  • Glorifying God whatever the circumstances

and truly so much more!

What is the Creating a Great Day Blog?

For us, the Creating a Great Day Blog is not only a resource for women but also a mission field to encourage women to glorify God whatever the day brings.

It’s purpose is wrapped up in these two verses:

This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it.

Psalm 118:24

But encourage each other daily, as long as it’s called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Hebrews 3:13

How It All Began

At the beginning of 2015, I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to use what I had learned with OKCMomsblog.com to start a blog proclaiming Him.  Although I loved the idea, I fought it because I believed I didn’t have the time nor the energy.

However, God is good and faithful to those he calls, so He provided all that we needed for it to happen.

1st

It came with my finally trusting Him, giving up the excuses, and writing out a plan.

2nd

God put the same nudging on Britnie’s heart and at the end of April, she texted saying that “we should start a christian women’s blog.” God couldn’t have provided a better partner for this website!  She is an amazing person who shines Christ’s love on everyone she meets and works her tail off!

3rd

God provided encouraging husbands, who are gifted in their own ways, and help us focus all of our ideas.

4th

God provided contributor’s to bring you daily heart, encouraging content.  We can’t wait for you to read for yourself the amazing things God has done in their lives!

5th

God provided the talented McKenzie, creator of The Lettered Light, to design the visual expression of Creating a Great Day.

6th

God provided a great mentor in Erin, owner of OKC Mom’s Blog.  She has been extremely supportive and encouraging as we venture out into the blogosphere. A couple others like Kelly, creator of The OK Momma, and Kara, creator of AllterNativeLearning, have also shared their wisdom.

7th

God has brought you here to be encouraged so that you can go out to create a great day for others!

Will you join us on our journey to Create a Great Day!?!
