Introducing Laura!

Introducing Laura!

Hello. I grew up traveling the world as a military brat. I ultimately felt God’s pull to Oklahoma Christian University where I met my husband. We now have 3 beautiful children and have settled in Mustang, Oklahoma.  I am a homeschooling mom and with 3 kiddos it is a full time job! I am daily encouraged by God’s great patience and grace in my life. In my free time I enjoy reading and crafting.

1.  What is your favorite Bible verse?
Psalm 139:9-10

“If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

2.  Who is the most relatable Bible character to you and why?
I have always loved the book of Job.  I don’t totally understand why, but I think it may be partly because I admire his faith and perseverance.  I think the other part of it is his raw suffering that you see in the book.  I think he may be arguably one of the most raw characters of the bible.  You can feel his grief and suffering through his words.  I think that I can identify with each person presented in the book of Job, from those who urge him to rebuke his faith, to Job who stands fast in his faith in God and is blessed beyond measure in the end.

3.  What is your favorite go-to easy meal?
Cheese and black bean quesadillas or bean soup.

4.  What are your hobbies?
I love to read however I don’t generally have too much time for it.  I also really enjoy crafting anything that I can with a glue gun! But again, I rarely have time for it anymore.

5.  What is your favorite tv show or movie?
I like watching Chopped on Netflix on the rare occasion that I have the TV to myself!  I also love Pride and Prejudice.

6.  What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?
The most refreshing thing I have done in my free time is going to Target and wondering the aisles alone.

7.  Who is your role model?
My great-grandmother is definitely my role model.  She is the most classy, stable, strong Christian woman I have ever known.  She has known her share of heartache and yet her faith proves strong.  She will be 92 this year and has deteriorated greatly in the last two years.  I wish I could talk to her and see her in all of her glory again!

8.  Would your rather vacation at a mountain cabin or a beach house?
I am always torn on this question because I am definitely a people person and I thrive on personal relationships however I really covet my alone time (which I NEVER get anymore!). So right now I’d say mountain cabin if the kids weren’t there, because I wouldn’t want to have to entertain them!

9.  What is the best thing about yourself?
I have a diverse background because of being raised in a military family and growing up around the country and the world. I feel like this makes me more accepting of others differences (sometimes, I’m still human!). I hope that my diverse experiences allows me to reach different kinds of people.

10.  What is one of your favorite books and/or what are you reading right now?
I’m not reading anything right now, however I do love The Giver.  It is one I read every year.

5 Easy Ways To Encourage The Tired Mom

5 Easy Ways To Encourage The Tired Mom

My5 Ways to(3) first two children were excellent sleepers.   They had been sleeping through the night, for the most part, from the time they were around 2-months-old.  They would sleep through anything and they would sleep anywhere.  I thought this whole “baby sleeping” thing was a piece of cake.

On the off chance I had a “bad” night, the next day when I would talk to my friends, who had babies who refused to sleep at night.  I would say things like, “Oh, I so know what you mean.  My baby woke up twice last night!!”

Now that I have had a baby of my own who refused to sleep, I marvel at my friend’s self-control for not punching me square in the face after I muttered those words.

After we welcomed baby number 3, I thought I would never sleep again.  He is, what I like to call my little “no-sleeper,” meaning he said,  “No!” to sleep no matter how hard I tried.  I would try to put him down and he would scoff at my feeble attempts.  In fact, I think he had a timer that knew the exact moment when my head would hit the pillow because as soon as I quietly laid down I would hear his distinct cry.

I would listen to my friends talk about how their 3-week-old slept peacefully through the night, while my “no-sleeper” still woke up every 3 hours at 11-months-old.  Don’t get me wrong, I really didn’t mind getting up at night to nurse a baby.   Babies wake up at night, that’s what they do.  It’s their rite of passage.  However, this fact did not make the days any easier when I was trying to function on such little sleep.

Being exhausted for so many months on end is physically and emotionally hard.  I walked around in a zombie like state.  Some days my brain felt both equal parts overly-caffeinated  and utterly exhausted.  Who knew those two could co-exist?

Now that we have finally {fingers crossed} turned the corner in the sleep department, I thought it would be a good idea to offer up some friendly suggestions on ways to encourage the tired mom.  We all have tired mom friends, and if you so happen to be the tired mom, I feel ya!  I have been there, you are so not alone, and this too shall pass.

5 Easy Ways to Encourage the Tired Mom

1.  Ding-Dong-Drink –  Get your fellow mama friend her favorite caffeinated beverage of choice.  Drop the drink off on her door step, ring the doorbell, and run.

2.  Free Cleaning Lady At Your Service – Laundry, dishes, and vacuuming is not a high priority when you are running on little to no sleep.  Offer to come and help her do a little cleaning. (Make sure to offer in a “I want to help you” way, not a “Wow, you live like this?” way)  It’s amazing how much someone doing something as simple as the dishes can make such a big impact on a tired moms day.

3. Let her catch some zzzz’s – or take a bubble, or have a Bible study in peace.  Let her enjoy a couple of hours to do whatever she pleases to herself.  If she is not up to completely leaving the baby yet, watch the baby in her house or just watch the older kiddos!

4.  Breakfast of champions –  People line up to bring new parents dinners.  This is great and extremely helpful!  However, breakfast can be a daunting task a couple of months down the road when a person has a “no-sleeper” on their hands.  Bring a breakfast dish over the night before that can easily be reheated in the morning, or drop it off at their door when you are certain everyone is awake!

5.  A friend is a friend indeed – Be there for her to go to when she needs encouragement and support.  Sometimes a tired mama doesn’t need to hear advice or tips (chances are she’s tried them all).  She just needs a friend to vent to in the hard times, and a friend to rejoice with her in the good.

How do you help your fellow tired mamas?

Has anyone ever helped you when you were struggling with exhaustion?

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up,
just as you are already doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11

Introducing Elizabeth!

Introducing Elizabeth!

I am a recovering Army brat who loves to travel and start new adventures. My handsome husband and I met at Oklahoma Christian University and he whisked me away to Kansas. So, I bought some ruby red high heels and made Topeka my home. I have a rough and rowdy Princess 2-year-old girl and amazing twin boys (1) who make every day an adventure. We are grateful to be part of an amazing church in Topeka who regularly challenges and encourages our whole family. I have been both a full-time working mom and a stay-at-home-mom and/or both at the same time at one point or another. I am constantly seeking God’s wisdom on “balancing it all” and following His plan for my life, not mine.

1. What is your favorite Bible verse?
Seems cliché but probably Romans 8:28. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[a] have been called according to his purpose.”
God is faithful, His will is sovereign. I cling to this truth daily.

2. Who is the most relatable Bible character to you and why?
Moses. He struggled and doubted, he felt flawed and inadequate, he had a past and a frustrating family, he got angry but he loved his people fiercely. In spite of, or because of, all of this God fully prepared and equipped him to fulfill the purpose for which he was called. Moses was righteous and he loved and obeyed God even through the consequences he bore for both his own failings and the failings of the Israelites.

3. What is your favorite go-to easy meal?
Tacos! My husband loves them and they can be a great “clean out the fridge” opportunity. ☺

4. What are your hobbies?
Honestly, I’d like to say my hobbies are “shopping and doing Pinterest crafts” but really, it’s Politics.

5. What is your favorite tv show or movie?
Favorite Movie, this is a hard one to narrow down but my go to classic is probably either Emma or When Harry Met Sally. Favorite show, well it would be cooler to say “Castle”, but again with the honesty… it is Star Trek TNG.

6. What’s your favorite thing to do in your free time?
My favorite thing to do in my free time is spend time together as a family doing something memorable or go on a walk with my husband.

7. Who is your role model?
Identifying one role model is hard because there are so many different people who have deeply influenced my life in various areas, but if I go with a current well-known celebrity role model- right now it’s Candace Cameron Bure.

8. Would your rather vacation at a mountain cabin or a beach house?
BEACH! All. The. Way. I daydream about it regularly.

9. What is the best thing about yourself?
Not a great day to ask this one, haha. This particular day on which I am answering these questions has not been my most stellar performance. ☺ Today the best thing is my AMAZING shoe collection. LOL But really, my shoe collection is pretty great.

10. What is one of your favorite books and/or what are you reading right now?

I love reading. My favorite quote is “You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me” – C.S. Lewis Out of the Silent Planet and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are leftover favorites from my childhood, along with the Chronicles of Narnia. But I am lover of Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. Right now, I am burrowing into an Agatha Raisin mystery.
